Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) signed the Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act. Jim Doyle, President of Business Forward, released the following statement:

“Congratulations to the state of New York on passing the CLCPA. Their ambitious approach to transforming the energy economy positions New York as a leader on climate policy,” Doyle said, “and thank you to members of the NY Renews coalition for years of work, without whom this would not have been possible.”

“CLCPA promises to keep energy spending in-state, targeting significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and saving tens of billions of dollars currently spent on fossil fuels. New York imports more than $50 billion in coal, gas, and oil each year, and CLCPA will bring much of that spending back to New York.”

“This is a nation-leading step, but there is still work to be done for climate justice and equity.”

More than 1,500 New York business leaders have signed onto a letter calling for New York to stop importing $50 billion in oil, gas, and coal each year.
