April 10, 2019, Washington, DC—Jim Doyle, President of Business Forward, released the following statement regarding the House passing the “Save the Internet Act:”
Today, the House passed meaningful net neutrality legislation. It’s a big step forward and the result of a lot of hard work by Democrats. But a bill that can only pass one half of Congress isn’t a real solution.
We need a bipartisan compromise with the Republican-controlled Senate in order to advance this important legislation this year. If not, we risk two more years of gridlock that leaves consumers and small businesses vulnerable.
Having worked on net neutrality with the Obama White House and FCC, it’s frustrating that disagreement over the best way to protect net neutrality may inadvertently hand anti-net neutrality Republicans another victory. It’s also hard to see bipartisan proposals attacked as “caving in” when they’re what President Obama proposed, and Democrats supported, when they controlled the House and Senate and ran the FCC.
Business leaders in our network consider a meaningful solution for net neutrality a top priority for Congress — more important than cybersecurity, data privacy or broadband access. Nearly 1,000 business leaders recently called on Congress to approach net neutrality and privacy in a bipartisan way. It’s time to put politics aside and protect the internet.
